Installing PULSE

If you are installing from a DVD:

  1. Insert the DVD. If the PC does not have a DVD drive, you can:
  2. If the setup screen does not automatically start, run "Setup.exe" from the DVD's top level.
  3. Click the PULSE button to start installation.
  4. Follow the on-screen instructions.

If you have downloaded PULSE:

  1. Extract the zip file.
  2. Run "Setup.exe" from the folder to which the data was extracted.
  3. Click the PULSE button to start installation.
  4. Follow the on-screen instructions.

The software ships with an essential LAN-XI firmware update. Please use the Front-end Setup to ensure firmware update of your LAN-XI modules (after installation, click Start >All Programs > PULSE > Front-end Setup).

The dongle should be disconnected during PULSE installation. After installing PULSE, insert the dongle. The dongle will blink for up to 30 seconds while it is updated. Once updated the dongle should light continuously. See the troubleshooting section if the dongle doesn't update correctly or stop blinking.

SQL Server 2008 Express

PULSE 17 now comes with SQL Server 2008 R2 Express.

Performing a default installation of PULSE 17 on a computer that doesn’t have SQL Server 2008 Express installed, from a previous PULSE installation, will now install SQL Server 2008 R2 Express.

If SQL Server 2008 Express was left over from a previous PULSE installation, the default installation of PULSE 17 will use the existing SQL Server Express installation, instead of performing an upgrade. To manually upgrade the previously used SQL Server 2008 Express into SQL Server 2008 R2 Express, manually run the UpgradeSQLExpress.vbs from the PULSE LabShop installation folder, before performing the PULSE installation.

SQL Server 2008 R2 Express provides an increased maximum database size of 10GB, up from the previous 4GB provided by SQL Server 2008 Express.

Please note that the databases generated by the SQL Server 2008 R2 Express are not backwards compatible with SQL Server 2008 Express. This means that a database that is detached or backed up from an SQL Server 2008 R2 Express cannot be restored or attached on an SQL Server 2008 Express.

If you intend to share databases among multiple computers, you should ensure that all of the computers use the same version of SQL Server.

Installing Licenses

To retrieve your license:

  1. If you are using a USB dongle, instead of your network interface card's ID, mount the dongle.
  2. Start PULSE. The License Manager should open automatically. If not, click Tools, License Manager.
  3. Click Browse and drag the old license file to the Archive folder.
  4. Double-click the Host ID you wish to copy.

Changing Location of Databases and Filefarm During Installation

During installation of PULSE with custom settings, there is an option to change the location of the databases and the filefarms. When making changes to these settings, please keep the following in mind:

Installation Troubleshooting

Antivirus software

If an unexpected dialog appears during installation, disconnect from the Internet and disable your antivirus software's real-time scanner. You should disconnect from the Internet before disabling part of your antivirus software to protect yourself from web-based attacks while the real-time scanning software is disabled. Your antivirus software's options can usually be displayed by clicking on its icon on the task bar.

Installation Troubleshooting Page

There are a number of known issues with the installation of PULSE, for example Error 1330 Invalid digital signature. We have documented these issues and their respective solutions and made them available on an Installation Troubleshooting page.

Analog Self-test

Analog Self-test for LAN-XI was introduced in PULSE 17.0. This first version only supported Type 3050 (6 Channels @ 50 kHz bandwidth) modules. With PULSE 17.1 we now support all LAN-XI modules.

You can find Analog Self-test in the Front-end Setup program in the PULSE Program Group. Once this is started, you select Tools, Diagnostics where you will find three tests:

The new analog and digital self-tests works for configurations with up to 40 modules (defined in the "Configuration" screen – the first you see in Front-end Setup).

If a configuration contains more than 40 modules, we recommend that you split it into smaller configurations.

As configurations can be saved, it is relatively easy to store, for example, two halves of a complete configuration, and reuse these for every test that is run.

PULSE Reflex Sound Quality Metrics Type 8710

Type 8710 adds sound quality metric calculations to Type 8702. Two specialized process chain elements calculate: overall metric values/spectra, or metric values/spectra vs. time.

PULSE Reflex Angle Domain Analysis Type 8740

PULSE Reflex Angle Domain Analysis Type 8740 is a time data post-processing application for analysing sound and vibration in the angle domain. Its primary use is crank-angle analysis of internal combustion engine/powertrain systems, but it can be used to analyse any rotating system where cyclic phenomena need to be investigated.

PULSE Reflex Telephone Testing Type 8770

Type 8770 is a new application for audio performance testing of telephones. The following standards are supported: 3GPP2 CS.0056, ITU-T Rec. P.862 and ITU-T Rec. P.863.

PULSE Reflex Abaqus Interface Type 8718-C

The interface enables import of large Abaqus® FE models into PULSE Reflex Modal Analysis Type 8720/21 and PULSE Reflex Correlation Analysis Type 8722. The imported models can be used for test planning and/or model correlation.

PULSE Reflex Correlation Analysis Type 8722

Type 8722 enables complete correlation analysis between two modal models, whether they are Finite Element models or physical test models. This helps evaluate different test and modelling strategies, identify shortcomings in modal tests, identify areas of insufficient modelling quality, and define targets and variables for model updating.

Improvements in version 17.1:

PULSE Generic Auxiliary Digital Interface Type 3099-E

PULSE Generic Auxiliary Digital Interface (GADI) Type 3099-E is an extension to PULSE LabShop Front-end Drivers Type 3099-A and 3099-D that allows you to insert “slow” digital process values into the LabShop data stream. Here they appear as auxiliary data and can be used similar to analog auxiliary data. Set-up and integration of GADI require a programmer who has knowledge of your process data and will make the final programmatic integration with your LabShop application.

Reflex Core Improvements

BKC, the native Reflex format, is now documented as an external format. It enables export of a complete set of data, with associated meta-data, from a selected folder in the Project Tree, including data in all sub-folders.

A project, along with its setups, process chains, and reports can now be saved as a template from which new projects can be created. A new project, created in this way, lets you process data in a pre-defined way, including the analysis process and report.

The LabShop integration component is now accessible from the main toolbar and can now import from the Measurement Organiser (previously only the Function Organiser was supported

The Search component has been extended to give a better of overview of the contents of a database.

It is now possible to run a Reflex service allowing remote connections to the Reflex database. Single-user access enables any user on the network to work in the database, but only one at a time.

Fixed-frequency interactive filters (FIR-based) have been added to the time editor

It is now possible to create a region containing all signals in a recording by loading as few as one signal (for example a tachometer pulse train) into the Time Editor.

The order cursor in the time editor's spectrogram can now be put in “snap” mode to move only between whole orders or fractions of orders, for example quarter orders.

New zoom features have been added to the spectrogram in the time editor.

A new display element called the Individual Display has been added to the process chain with the same setup methodology as the Data Viewer. Each element can have different display strategies and more than one can be added to any one analysis element

Automatic reporting is active whenever a report (Word, Excel or PowerPoint) is open

Two new overall analysis elements have been addedto the process chain: one for simple overall analysis, the other for overall analysis vs. RPM.

A new Result Matrix component has been added to the Data Viewer providing a powerful means to organize results from a number of tests into a matrix in which each cell represents data having common signal name and result type

The Scalar Table has been enhanced to provide display of single-value results from, for example, SQ Metrics, Overall analysis and statistics.

Live GCX displays (as well as the previously available metafile format) can now be selected for report generation in the Data Viewer.

Display setup parameters have been improved for axis settings, display units, trace colour and texture, and readout and cursor options. You can now store and recall favourite settings

The batch time file converter, which converts thirrd-party format time files into PTI files, is now embedded in the Project Tree menus.

The PULSE installation also includes an interactive flash video summary of the LAN-XI product line. This video offers a menu-driven guide to the LAN-XI front-end product line, featuring frame, modules, homepage, accessories, etc. You find the LAN-XI System Information by clicking Getting Started in the DVD menu.

PULSE Reflex Telephone Test Type 8770

Sometimes a test case does not start automatically. The test case will time out after 1 minute but can be started manually.

Sending measurement does not support LAN-XI. This will be corrected in PULSE 17.1.

Transducer Database

The transducer database in PULSE 17 is not the same as in PULSE 16. This can lead to limitations in mixed version environments.

Version 16 works with a PULSE 17 database without problems.

Version 17 also works with a PULSE 16 database, but you should be aware that:

PULSE LabShop Recorder misses first part of recording when started with signal trigger on 30+ channel systems

Symptom: When using a signal trigger to start a recording with the PULSE LabShop Recorder, some data is missing at the beginning of the recording. This has only been seen on systems with more than 30 channels, but could happen on lower channel systems too.

Solution: The channel used for the signal trigger should be the lowest possible channel according to the Harwdare Setup table or Configuration Organiser.

Zoom in Array Acoustics Post-processing

Manually zooming (Alt + Ctrl + Shift + Left Mouse + Move down) on result maps may cause data points, mesh lines and sound power areas to disappear from the maps.

Workaround: Zoom by right-clicking in the map, selecting Decoration and using the Zoom slider

Communication Error with Front-end: "Samples lost in input module"

In the event of communication error with the front-end, ensure that the netcard in the PC is set to "100 Mbps Full Duplex" instead of "Auto Negotiate" (Link Speed under Advanced Properties).

If this does not solve the problem, try rolling back the driver to an earlier version.

NOTAR: SD Card Formatting

Before making any recordings with a new SD card, it is strongly recommended that you format the SD card using the SD Formatter application provided by the SD Association.

Cards formatted in other devices, including Windows PCs, may not perform well enough to be used with NOTAR, and data loss may occur as a result. NOTAR will indicate this by aborting the recording and displaying Slow SD card and/or Error 402 under Status on the Recorder control page.

Spherical Beamforming calculations calculated with PULSE 15.1 and earlier are always displayed as spherical meshes, even if Unfold Spherical Meshes is selected.

To fix this problem, recalculate the Spherical Beamforming calculation.

Computer with Radeon graphics card freezes

Open the Catalyst Control Center by right clicking on your desktop. Then select crossfire and uncheck Enable CrossFire.

Settings are changed when old files are loaded into Reflex

Some settings may be lost when loading files created in PULSE Reflex 14.1

The Diagnostics Tool in Front-end setup may stop working under certain conditions

There are two known causes for this problem. IPv6 may be causing the problem, try disabling that feature. This problem may also occur if you are using a 64-bit version of Microsoft Windows and PULSE is not installed in the default Program folder.

Changing the transducer in a project might lead to a wrong unit in your data

When changing the transducer on an input in the configuration organiser, the unit might change to V. To avoid this problem you can either change the transducer in the Hardware Table or change the transducer in the Configuration Organiser by removing the current transducer and adding the new transducer.

Noise Source Identification Type 7752: limited use of Edit/copy function

In Noise Source Identification Type 7752 and Moving Source Beamforming BZ-5496 the Edit/Copy function does not work. Use Print Screen instead. The Edit/Copy function works in Array Acoustics Post Processing.

PULSE Sound Power Type 7799

Rectangular drawings of Sound Power areas in Intensity mapping do not work properly. All drawn areas are in the same position on the map.

Workaround: Use free-hand drawing.

HASP dongle flashing

The LED blinking might be caused by the firmware upgrade that is automatically performed by the driver when you plug the key in the first time.

If, after 20 to 30 seconds, the dongle doesn’t stop blinking, then there is a problem with the dongle's firmware update. To fix the problem:

If that doesn’t help you can:

  1. Unplug the Key
  2. Go into Services (Open the Control Panel via the Start Menu, then open Administrative Tools>Services)
  3. Restart the “Sentinel HASP Business Studio Server” and “Sentinel HASP License Manager” services
  4. After restarting the services, plug the Dongle into the USB-Port and check ACC to see if the dongle has been recognized. To check ACC, open http://localhost:1947/and click HASP Keys. If your key has been recognized it should be in the list with a location marked as Local.

Analyzing recordings at maximum speed

On some systems and project configurations, an overrun (CPB) or failed overlap (FFT) might occur when analysing data recordings at maximum speed.

To check for these failures you can look at different places:

Migration of PULSE Databases when upgrading from 14.0 or older

On the SQL Installation Troubleshooting page of the Brüel & Kjær support site, you can find information and troubleshooting on the installation and migration of PULSE Databases.

Performance decrease while using a processor with Hyper Threading enabled

Some computers using Intel Hyper Threading (HT) technology might feature lower than expected performance. This may be caused by the overhead induced by the virtualization involved in HT and can be solved by disabling this feature; usually in the computer BIOS.

General PULSE

"Object library invalid or contains references to object definitions that could not be found" message appears while using Microsoft Office

The problem is with VBA when automating Microsoft® Office applications and can be introduced after upgrading to a newer Office version or through a Windows® security update. Affected applications, such as PULSE Balancing Consultant and Sound Power, that use VBA to generate reports will fail to do so. To correct the problem, we suggest that you follow the instructions given here:

If you are using Office Visual Basic for Applications, you may also need to delete the cached versions of the control type libraries. To do this, search your hard drive for ".exd," and delete all the .exd files. The .exd files will be re-created automatically using the new controls the next time that you use VBA.

OLE dispatch error while putting a graph into 64-bit Microsoft® Office 2010

PULSE cannot make reports including Modern Displays (GCX) when using 64-bit Office 2010.

Missing error information when DHCP fails

If a LAN-XI module is running DHCP, and the display keeps reporting “0.0.0.0” as the IP address, you should try the following:

  1. Power the module off.
  2. Remove the LAN cable.
  3. Power the module on.
  4. Wait for module boot to finish (indicator).
  5. Plug in the LAN cable again.

After a period of time the module will try to acquire the IP address again, and errors will now be reported to the display.

Unable to inform about a changed configuration upon exit

The Front-end Setup cannot determine if the configuration has been saved or not, so you have to click "Apply Configuration," before you exit the program, to ensure that the configuration has been applied and saved.

Data are not visible in the ATM Hammer template

During force calibration, expected data may not be visible. Activating the Template <F2> will fix the problem.

LAN-XI modules do not work with Type 3660-D frame

LAN-XI firmware should be updated to the version that is included with this release to be compatible with Type 3660-D frames.

Anti-virus program issues

Warnings appearing when using PULSE:

A computer security program, like F-Secure®, Norton™ AntiVirus or Symantec™ Endpoint Protection, may report a malicious program attack while PULSE is running. The computer security program is interpreting PULSE's attempts to access system parameters as malicious activity. The computer security program should be configured to ignore these attempts. This is usually achieved by adding the specific PULSE application program to the security program's trusted programs list, or by clicking the "always allow" checkbox in the malicious activity report.

Unexpected program HALT:

Some security programs can interrupt the normal operation of PULSE, causing an unexpected HALT. The security program can, in some cases, even take charge of your computer's CPU process priority, interrupting the running of a PULSE measurement. We recommend to first try the above-mentioned solution or stopping the security program. If nothing else works, you may have to uninstall the security program completely.

Performance degradation:

Anti-virus programs with built-in firewall functionality that scan network packages may cause performance problems affecting network throughput and latency. If the network scan program is required, you may want to detach the PC from the network while running PULSE and use only standard Windows® protection.

Problems starting PULSE Front-end Setup from Time Data Recorder Type 7708

It is possible to start the PULSE Front-end Setup from inside Time Data Recorder. However, you are limited to the type of hardware you can switch between. So when using IDAe frames, you can only change to another IDAe configuration, and when using LAN-XI modules, you can only change to another LAN-XI configuration.

Large numbers of windows cause PULSE to crash or disappear

PULSE may crash or disappear when a large number of windows are open, because the Desktop Heap is too small to contain them all. Expanding the Desktop Heap will solve the problem, but slow PULSE slightly. To expand, follow the steps below:

  1. Open "Regedit.exe" from "Run..." in the Start menu.
  2. Navigate to "Windows" under "HKEY_LOCALMACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\SubSystems."
  3. Change "%SystemRoot%\system32\csrss.exe ObjectDirectory=\Windows SharedSection=1024,3072,512 Windows=On SubSystemType=Windows ServerDll=basesrv,1 ServerDll=winsrv:UserServerDllInitialization,3 ServerDll=winsrv:ConServerDllInitialization,2 ProfileControl=Off MaxRequestThreads=16."
  4. To "%SystemRoot%\system32\csrss.exe ObjectDirectory=\Windows SharedSection=1024,6144,512 Windows=On SubSystemType=Windows ServerDll=basesrv,1 ServerDll=winsrv:UserServerDllInitialization,3 ServerDll=winsrv:ConServerDllInitialization,2 ProfileControl=Off MaxRequestThreads=16."
  5. Restart the computer.
  6. Increasing the Application Heap beyond 6144 may cause Windows® to become unstable.

Note: This workaround is not necessary under Windows® 7.

  1. Create a new folder in the project (within the Project Browser).
  2. Drag-and-drop the data from the Scratchpad branch to the newly created folder.
  3. Right-click in the Scratchpad table and select Remove All (or press <Ctrl+Del>).
  4. Drag-and-drop the data from the newly created folder to the Scratchpad table. The data should now show up in the display.

Y-axis units with Human Vibration Weighting

When results are displayed, they are shown with units of m/s. This is a display error only - the real units are m/s^1.75 and the displayed values are correct.

Windows® 7

Objects in the PULSE user interface are not sized correctly

Windows 7 allows you to increase the size of user interface elements to make it easier to read items on the screen. This is not supported by PULSE. Open the Display control panel and select Smaller - 100%.

Using USB License Dongle with Remote Desktop Connection

When using a USB License Dongle on a PC that is connected to via Remote Desktop Connection, the Dongle will not be recognised by PULSE. This only applies to Remote PCs running Windows 7. To resolve this problem you should use a license locked to your PC. To rehost your license, please contact your local support representative.

Saved files disappear

Files saved in some folders, like the "Program Files" folder, may disappear. As a security precaution, Windows® 7 does not allow files to be saved under some folders. Even when the save seems to be completed, the file does not exist. Save the document to another folder.

Vehicle Pass-by Software Type 7788-B and 7788-C

Windows® XP and Windows® 7 have different settings to provide the system from "Front-end connection lost"

Windows® XP

Locate the following entry in the registry:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINES\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip\Parameters

Add a new key (D-word) with the name ‘TcpMaxDataRetransmissions’, and set it to the maximum Hexadecimal value (‘ffffffff’).

Windows® 7

Locate the following entry in the registry:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINES\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip\Parameters

Add a new key (D-word) with the name ‘TcpMaxDataRetransmissions’, and set it to the maximum Hexadecimal value (‘255’).

When using Cisco 1240 series APs powered by POE, make sure no other power supplies are connected! Otherwise this will result in a slow or not responding unit.
